MESSAGING

Use the messaging guidance and GIFs below on your digital and social media channels to continue to shift your community to take action and support each other. Don't forget to use and promote the hashtag #MentalHealthAction.

Mental health can be a tough topic to talk about. Here are some basic guidelines to make sure you encourage and empower your audience to take action.

  • Here are five key strategies to guide our campaign in empowering young men's wellness:

    • Empower Diverse Actions: We'll encourage our community to take action for young men's wellness in whatever way feels right for them – from personal self-care and connecting with loved ones to advocating for systemic change and improved access to resources.

    • Highlight Accessible & Free Resources: We'll prioritize actions and resources that are free and easily accessible, recognizing that not everyone has equal access to all forms of support. This includes promoting self-calming activities, community initiatives, and free resources from our partners.

    • Foster Open Sharing & End Stigma: We'll encourage young men and their allies to share their personal wellness journeys and what works for them, using platforms like social media to demystify wellness action-taking and combat stigma. Use #TheresMoreToYou.

    • Amplify Local, Culturally Competent Partners: We'll actively seek out and collaborate with local organizations that provide targeted, culturally relevant resources and support for young men in their communities.

    • Emphasize Holistic Wellness & Invite Participation: We'll consistently remind everyone that mental and emotional well-being are crucial parts of overall health. We'll also ask our audience to invite others to join this movement, sharing our resources and spreading the message of empowerment.

  • Here are key considerations for what to avoid when crafting messages and content for Young Men's Empowerment Day:

    • Don't Limit the Scope to Specific Conditions: Instead of focusing only on specific mental health diagnoses, emphasize the full spectrum of well-being journeys. Remind everyone that all young men have mental health that needs nurturing and care.

    • Don't Ask for Uncomfortable Sharing: Never pressure your audience to share anything with friends, family, colleagues, or online that makes them uncomfortable. Respect personal boundaries.

    • Don't Reinforce or Overstate Stigma: Be cautious of narratives that overly emphasize stigma, judgment, or mistreatment toward young men facing wellness challenges. Such portrayals can inadvertently discourage them from speaking up when they are struggling.

    • Don't Share Potentially Harmful Details: Avoid unintentionally providing information or reinforcing misconceptions that could lead to harmful behaviors or misunderstandings. Prioritize safety and accuracy in all communications.

    • Don't Define Individuals by Their Challenges: Steer clear of language that labels young men by their conditions. Avoid words like "suffering" or "victim." Instead, emphasize that individuals are "living with" conditions like depression or anxiety, acknowledging that their experience is multifaceted and they may not be "suffering" at all times.

    • Don't Lean into Stereotypes: Be highly mindful of stereotypes when depicting young men's wellness stories. Strive for authenticity and genuine representation over tired tropes or caricatures.

  • Guiding Principles for Storytelling and Content Creation

Here are our guiding principles for how we'll portray young men's wellness throughout this campaign:

    • Show the Full Spectrum of Wellness: We'll expand our depictions of young men's well-being to reflect the entire range of experiences—from thriving and resilience to coping with challenges and moments of struggle.

    • Embrace Diverse Representation: We'll tell stories from diverse communities, ensuring that young men and their allies from all backgrounds feel seen, understood, and empowered to take action.

    • Elevate Supportive Relationships: We'll spotlight the crucial role of friends and family, showcasing stories where they offer—or learn to offer—effective support, making the journey toward wellness feel less daunting.

    • Depict Realistic, Effective Actions: Our content will show authentic portrayals of effective strategies and supports, including therapeutic approaches when relevant, to demystify the process and encourage young men to seek help.

    • Highlight Practical Coping Skills and Self-Care: We'll emphasize the power of accessible coping mechanisms and self-care practices, moving beyond any perception that these are indulgences and instead showing them as vital tools for daily well-being.

    • Acknowledge Complex Causes: We'll represent the varied factors that contribute to young men's wellness challenges, better equipping our audience to support themselves and the people they care about.
